L-Acoustics K3 : Compact Full-Range Line Array for Touring and Live Sound
The L-Acoustics K3 is a compact, full-range line array loudspeaker designed for professional sound reinforcement applications that require high output, extended low-frequency response and precise audience coverage in a relatively compact format.
Part of the renowned L-Acoustics K Series, the K3 combines two 12-inch low-frequency drivers with a 4-inch high-frequency compression driver. It delivers up to 143 dB maximum SPL with a usable bandwidth extending from 42 Hz to 20 kHz.
Positioned between the KARA II and K2 in the K Series, the K3 line array is particularly well suited to medium and large-scale concerts, touring productions, festivals, theatres, corporate events and permanent installations.
Full-Range Performance in a Compact Format
The K3 has been designed to provide the performance associated with larger-format line arrays while maintaining dimensions and weight that simplify transport, rigging and deployment.
Its 2-way active WST architecture uses :
- 2 × 12-inch neodymium low-frequency drivers
- 1 × 4-inch neodymium high-frequency compression driver
- maximum SPL up to 143 dB
- usable bandwidth from 42 Hz to 20 kHz
- horizontal directivity of 70°, 90° asymmetric or 110°
- vertical directivity of 10° per enclosure
- net weight of 43 kg
- integrated 4-point rigging system
- IP55 protection.
With this combination of output, bandwidth and compact size, K3 provides a strong solution for systems where substantial full-range performance is required without moving to the physical scale of K2 or K1.
Extended Low-Frequency Response
One of the key advantages of the L-Acoustics K3 is its extended low-frequency capability.
With a usable bandwidth reaching down to 42 Hz, K3 can provide substantial low-frequency energy directly from the main line source.
This makes it possible to design powerful full-range systems while reducing the need for additional flown low-frequency elements in certain applications.
For productions requiring greater impact or deeper low-frequency extension, K3 can also be combined with L-Acoustics subwoofers such as KS21 or KS28.
Panflex Adjustable Directivity
The K3 features L-Acoustics Panflex technology, allowing system designers to adjust the horizontal directivity of each enclosure.
Panflex helps adapt the horizontal coverage of the array to the actual audience geometry.
WST and DOSC Technologies
K3 is built around L-Acoustics' Wavefront Sculpture Technology (WST), which forms the basis of the brand's line source systems.
Its high-frequency section incorporates a DOSC waveguide, designed to create coherent coupling between adjacent enclosures when used as part of an array.
L-Vents for Powerful Low-Frequency Reproduction
The dual 12-inch low-frequency section uses L-Acoustics L-Vents technology.
L-Vents are designed to reduce turbulence in the bass-reflex ports, improving low-frequency efficiency and allowing the enclosure to maintain high output with reduced port noise.
Combined with its dual 12-inch drivers, this helps K3 deliver powerful and controlled low-frequency reproduction from a relatively compact enclosure.
Case Study : L-Acoustics K3 at OM in Liège
A strong example of the L-Acoustics K3 in a permanent live music installation can be found at OM in Seraing, near Liège, one of Wallonia’s leading concert venues.
For this project, XLR designed and deployed the L-Acoustics sound system to meet the venue’s demanding requirements : festival-grade output, excellent full-bandwidth coverage and a compact system that would not visually dominate the room.
The main PA is based on two arrays of eight K3 per side, complemented by four KS28 subwoofers per side. X12 loudspeakers provide near-field coverage, while A10 Wide enclosures are used as front-fills. The complete system is powered by LA12X amplified controllers. Using L-Acoustics Soundvision, XLR modelled and optimised the system to address the challenging acoustics of the venue.
The OM installation is a perfect example of how L-Acoustics K3 can bring large-format concert and festival performance into a relatively compact venue, while maintaining the clarity, consistency and rider acceptance expected by international touring productions.
Amplification and L-Acoustics System Integration
K3 is designed to operate within the complete L-Acoustics ecosystem.
It can be powered and processed by LA4X, LA8 or LA12X amplified controllers, which provide amplification, DSP processing, loudspeaker presets and system protection.
As part of a complete L-Acoustics system, K3 can be combined with:
- KS21 or KS28 subwoofers;
- X Series loudspeakers for fills;
- A Series systems for complementary audience zones;
- other K Series elements when required;
- L-Acoustics amplified controllers and network management.
This system-based approach allows loudspeakers, amplification and processing to work together as a predictable and coherent sound reinforcement platform.
K3 Within the L-Acoustics K Series
The K3 sits within the L-Acoustics K Series, which covers a broad range of long-throw line source applications.
The family currently includes KIVA II, KARA II, KARA IIi, K3, K3i, K2, K1 and K1-SB.
Within this range:
- KIVA II provides an ultra-compact line source solution;
- KARA II offers a lightweight dual 8-inch platform;
- K3 provides compact full-range performance with dual 12-inch drivers;
- K2 increases output and coverage for large-scale touring;
- K1 addresses the most demanding stadium and large-format concert applications.
K3 therefore occupies an important position for users who need more low-frequency capability and output than KARA II without requiring the scale of K2.
