Allen & Heath AHM-16

Allen & Heath AHM-16 is a 16 x 16 audio matrix processor for single-room and smaller multi-room installations. It combines 96 kHz processing, local analogue connections and configurable control for installed sound.

  • Processing: The 16 x 16 matrix provides configurable processing for source routing, zones and loudspeaker feeds.
  • Audio inputs and outputs: 8 mic/line inputs and 8 line outputs use Phoenix connectors for installation wiring.
  • Connectivity: An I/O slot accepts optional networking cards. SLink expansion requires the appropriate option card; it is not built in.
  • Control: A front-panel screen and 4 programmable SoftKeys complement remote control and GPIO integration.
  • System integration: Automatic mic mixing, priority ducking, equalisation, dynamics and delay support the installed audio system.

Working with the Allen & Heath AHM-16

An installed audio system has to work for the people using the building, not only for the engineer commissioning it. Plan the AHM-16 around sources, listening areas and everyday control requirements.

Define the needs of each space

Start by mapping the room sources and the areas that need independent level or source selection. This model is intended for smaller systems, so separate the essential requirements from possible future additions. Check the processing and connection budget together; unused sockets alone do not describe the capacity of a completed design.

Plan the audio expansion

Choose the option card around the actual connection requirement. SLink expansion and Dante networking use different interfaces, so the card choice affects the rest of the design. Confirm the required remote inputs and outputs before ordering. This avoids treating a networking option as though it were already part of the standard processor.

Keep control clear for everyday use

Separate the technical configuration from the controls that staff need to use each day. Identify who may select sources, adjust levels or recall operating presets, and keep those choices consistent across the installation. Include a documented handover and an agreed default state so the system can return to a known operating condition after an event. For a new project, bring the room schedule and control brief to XLR.
