L-Acoustics L2D : Wide-Coverage Progressive Ultra-Dense Line Source

The L-Acoustics L2D is a high-performance professional line source designed to provide wide and controlled coverage from a remarkably compact enclosure. Part of the L-Acoustics L Series, L2D combines Progressive Ultra-Dense Line Source technology, integrated cardioid directivity and advanced horizontal coverage control to address demanding medium and large-scale sound reinforcement applications.

Where the L2 is optimised for narrower long-throw vertical coverage, the L2D extends the L Series concept to a 60° progressive vertical pattern, making it particularly effective for downfill duties, steep audience geometries and applications where a larger area must be covered from a limited number of loudspeaker elements.

With a maximum SPL of 151 dB, a usable bandwidth from 45 Hz to 20 kHz and a sophisticated 16-channel active architecture, L2D delivers large-format sound reinforcement performance while keeping the system compact and predictable.

L-Acoustics L2D Curve

Wide Vertical Coverage with Progressive Curvature

One of the defining characteristics of the L-Acoustics L2D is its 60° progressive vertical directivity. Rather than relying on a long array of individually articulated loudspeaker cabinets to create vertical coverage, L2D incorporates the required progressive curvature directly into the enclosure.

This makes it possible to distribute acoustic energy across a much wider vertical audience area using a highly integrated system.

The fixed progressive curvature also contributes to repeatable deployment, helping engineers obtain predictable coverage without mechanically adjusting a large number of individual line array elements.

PULS : Progressive Ultra-Dense Line Source Technology

L2D is built around L-Acoustics Progressive Ultra-Dense Line Source technology, commonly referred to as PULS.

This architecture concentrates a large number of transducers and amplification channels into a single enclosure while preserving the controlled wavefront behaviour expected from an L-Acoustics line source. The objective is not simply to make a smaller line array. Instead, L2D represents a different approach to creating a progressive acoustic source.

By integrating the curvature, transducers and processing into one highly controlled system, L-Acoustics can achieve high acoustic density while reducing the physical complexity traditionally associated with large professional arrays.

The result is a solution particularly suited to projects where high SPL, controlled coverage, architectural integration and deployment efficiency must coexist.

151 dB Maximum SPL from a Compact Enclosure

The L-Acoustics L2D line source can deliver up to 151 dB maximum SPL while maintaining a frequency response extending from 45 Hz to 20 kHz.

Inside the enclosure are :

  • 4 × 12-inch neodymium cone drivers
  • 8 × 10-inch neodymium cone drivers
  • 8 × 3-inch neodymium compression drivers

This unusually dense transducer configuration allows L2D to provide the output expected from a large-format professional sound system while occupying considerably less physical space than a conventional multi-element array.

At 149 kg, the enclosure is also designed as a complete integrated acoustic element rather than as another individual cabinet to be repeated many times.

Advanced Horizontal Directivity for Complex Venues

Vertical coverage is only one part of the L2D concept. The enclosure also provides sophisticated horizontal directivity control designed to follow changing audience geometry. The two upper acoustic modules use L-Acoustics Panflex technology, offering selectable horizontal coverage of:

70° / 90° / 110°

The two lower modules progressively widen their horizontal pattern from 110° up to 140°. This progressive horizontal behaviour is especially useful for downfill applications.

Audience areas close to a loudspeaker system typically require wider horizontal coverage than distant seating. L2D therefore adapts its dispersion accordingly: the upper section can remain focused toward more distant listeners while the lower portion opens progressively to address the audience closer to the array.

The result is more efficient use of acoustic energy and improved consistency across the listening area.

Integrated Cardioid Directivity

L2D also incorporates integrated cardioid behaviour, providing greater control over low-frequency propagation behind the system.

In traditional large-format sound reinforcement, controlling rearward low-frequency energy may require additional loudspeaker elements or dedicated configurations.

The L Series integrates this behaviour directly into the loudspeaker architecture.

For venues and live productions, this can help reduce unwanted acoustic energy behind the system, improve conditions on stage and limit excitation of surfaces or areas that do not require reinforcement.

This level of control is especially relevant in concert halls and architecturally complex spaces where acoustic energy must be precisely directed toward the audience.

A 16-Channel Active L-Acoustics System

The L2D is a 16-channel active loudspeaker powered and processed using the L-Acoustics LA7.16 or LA7.16i amplified controller.

This highly granular architecture gives L-Acoustics precise control over the individual sections of the enclosure.

Rather than driving large groups of transducers together, the system can apply optimised processing and amplification to different acoustic modules.

The result is a tightly integrated ecosystem combining :

L2D loudspeaker + LA7.16 amplification + DSP + LA Network Manager + Soundvision prediction

This system-level approach allows engineers to model the venue, optimise loudspeaker placement and configure coverage before deployment.

L2D and L2 : Two Complementary L Series Elements

The L2 and L2D share the same overall L Series philosophy, but they are designed to perform different acoustic roles.

The L2 provides 10° of progressive vertical coverage and reaches up to 155 dB SPL, making it particularly suited to long-throw sections of an array.

The L2D provides 60° vertical coverage and up to 151 dB SPL, allowing it to cover significantly larger vertical audience areas from a single enclosure.

This makes L2D a natural complement to L2 in many system designs.

An L2-based array can handle the longer-distance audience areas, while an L2D positioned lower in the system can progressively expand coverage toward listeners closer to the stage.

However, L2D is not limited to downfill use. Its wide progressive curvature also makes it an exceptionally interesting standalone line source for venues where a relatively short throw must be combined with broad vertical coverage.

L-Acoustics L2D at BOZAR Brussels

For XLR, the L-Acoustics L2D is more than a product specification. It is technology we have deployed in one of Belgium's most prestigious concert venues.

At the Henry Le Bœuf Hall at BOZAR in Brussels, XLR and ARTO installed a complete L-Acoustics L-ISA Hyperreal Sound system.

At the heart of the main reinforcement system are five L-Acoustics L2D loudspeakers, deployed as the frontal scene system for the L-ISA installation.

For BOZAR, this results in a powerful yet visually discreet system capable of addressing the complex geometry of a world-class concert hall.
